Fireworks: Color, Gradients and Transparencies

Start.

Howdy everyone! As I’ve mentioned in my previous post in this series, we are going to discuss colors, gradients and transparencies in Fireworks. Open your fireworks and create a new document. Create an ellipse using the ellipse tool found on the left side. To create a perfect circle, press and hold SHIFT while creating the ellipse.

Now look at your properties panel. It should be just below your drawing area, if you can’t see it, press CTRL-F3.

On the leftmost part, you can adjust the objects size and location on the canvass. Straightforward. Next set of icons allow you to change the objects color fill as well as fill type. The fill type comes in a variety of flavor. You can choose gradients or you can even choose a pattern. Play with the options to familiarize yourself with it. In addition to patterns, you can also add textures to your object. Think of patterns as the innate design of an object and texture as the physical characteristic of an object. To illustrate, think of 2 blankets, one made with cotton, the other made with silk – both of them have flower patterns. The flower is the pattern and the texture is either cotton or silk. The texture determines how much an object will reflect light, etc. You will also see EDGE in there, now that one controls how the edges are painted. You can feather the edges (which will blur the edges of the object). Feathering is efficient in achieving subtle shadows and midtones as we will see the next topics. For the fill stroke, think of it as the outline of the object. You can assign a different color for it, as well as add texture to the stroke. Playing with the above options, you can control virtually every aspect of the object to achieve the effect that you want.

The rightmost part of your control panel controls your objects transparency, blend mode as well as the options of adding filters. Feel free to experiment on the different options that you have available.

Filters and blend modes deserve their own topics as they are quite hefty, not really difficult, but quite hefty.

I did a little tinkering with our lonely ellipse, and this is what I got.

On our next topic, we will be discussing shadows, midtones and highlights. Till then!
End.
