Increase Traffic to your Blog

Hello everyone! How are you and your blogs doing? Do drop me a line, Id love to check the progress of your blog.
With your blog up and running, and with great content (I’m sure), the next logical step is to drive traffic to your blog. I’ll be giving you a couple of tips on what I did to drive traffic to my site.
Initially, I had it hosted on a subdomain, then on June 1st 2008, I decided to buy my own domain. Before we continue, I suggest that you sign up for an account with Google Analytics, as it’s very helpful in analysing traffic and trending for your site. Here are my stats on my previous subdomain [cajensoft.site88.net]:

I know, I know, it’s not that impressive compared to other sites. But it’s a start and I am actually quite proud of it, considering that it is my first blog and site. I started my blog on May 5th and from then until the end of May, I’ve had 625 visitors to my site. That’s an average of 24 visitors per day on my first few weeks. Come June 1st, I transferred my blog to my new domain and from then until yesterday, ive had 221 visitors. That’s still an average of 24 visitors per day. Those numbers might increase if I had more time promoting my blog. Now these are the initial things you might wanna do initially before you start promoting your blog.
1. Make sure your blog is up and running!
2. Think of something to blog about. This should be something that you are passionate about. Something that you can continuously talk and write about.
3. Make sure that your blog has a nice layout and theme. Make sure that your chosen design, colors and images reflect the topics that your blog will be covering.
4. Update frequently. Initially, you might wanna post almost on a daily basis, then start posting around 3x per week.
Now that we have taken care of that, let’s move on to generating traffic. There ARE literally TONS of resources and tutorials on how to promote your blog and generate traffic. The ones I’ll be enumerating are those that I have tried personally and have yielded results for my blog.
1. Know your community. Look for other online communities that have the same or related topics that your blog covers. They are your future visitors. Introduce yourself and your blog. Join in the discussions, and express your opinions. And more importantly, contribute and help. Make sure that you advertise your blog in a subtle way. For example, you can put a link to your blog in your signature. You can also point out a link to your blog to illustrate further a point that you are making (make sure that your post is relevant). And finally, whatever you do, NEVER SPAM.
2. Join Entrecard. Its an online community for bloggers, where you can advertise your blogs on other blogs. The beauty of Entrecard is that you get to choose the blogs where you want to advertise and that means targeted visitors. Targeted visitors are what you wanna aim for. I’d rather have 10 targeted visitors than 100 non-targeted visitors.
3. Invite your relatives, friends, online friends, neighbor, schoolmates, office mates, ad infinitum to visit your blog. At least one of them is bound to be interested in your blog. For me, this step yielded at least 5 regular visitors that I know of. (Hello Charles, Jon, Rhy, Arvs, and Cessie)
4. Visit blogs that cover the same topics as you do and comment on their posts. Make sure that your comments are relevant.
5. Do video tutorials and post them to video-sharing sites live youtube, revver, veoh etc. And link those sites from your blog. Make sure that you put a link to your blog from those sites as well.
There you have it guys. Those are so far my efforts, though minimal, in promoting my blog. In total, I have generated approximately 850 visitors during my first month. I will continue to add more as I test other ways of promoting your site. I am also going to discuss search engine optimization in the future. Im still in the process of learning it.
